Hon. Tony Payton, former State Representative, PA
Tony Payton, Jr. began his career in Pennsylvania government six years ago. Mr. Payton served in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, where he represented the 179th Legislative district. The district encompasses Hunting Park, Frankford, Feltonville, Olney and Oxford Circle, which are all neighborhoods within the City of Philadelphia. Mr. Payton worked on a wide range of issues during his tenure developing a working knowledge of many subjects. He worked most intently on issues of education, health care and transportation while in the House. Before his career as a Pennsylvania legislator, Tony worked with low-income families to improve their personal finances and help them achieve home ownership. Prior to that he worked in the mortgage industry. Mr. Payton has been named one of Philadelphia’s top 40 under 40 by the Philadelphia Tribune Magazine and one of the People to Watch by Philadelphia Magazine. Mr. Payton has relationships with legislators from both political parties, and a keen understanding of the legislative process.
Mr. Payton enjoys spending his free time serving Philadelphia’s nonprofit community and mentoring youth with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Southeastern Pennsylvania. He sits on the advisory committees and governing boards of Squash Smarts and the Children’s Crisis Treatment Center, Tech Impact PA, Operation Understanding, and Philly Youth Poetry Movement. He can also be seen frequently playing pickup basketball with youth throughout the city.
