Prez Hopeful Edwards Backs Vouchers? Holy Moses

The Politico has a report out this morning on Sen. John Edwards' forthcoming plans to eradicate the nation's "two America" school systems for the wealthy and the poor.

The dispatch, from Mike Allen, says Edwards plans to offer a million vouchers over five years to "help low-income families move to better neighborhoods. As part of his vow to end poverty, Edwards also wants to phase out housing projects that trap families in buildings that are shoddier and more expensive than private alternatives."

Yes, Edwards is coming out strong for housing vouchers as part of his education plan, seemingly because the public sector hasn't done such a great job with housing.

But what about failing inner city education systems that trap students in schools that are shoddier and more expensive than private alternatives?

Edwards would set aside $100 million so that districts can implement economic integration programs, i.e. busing, inner city magnet schools, bribes for wealthy suburban districts to enroll poor kids from the city.

Hmmm. Stay tuned.

UPDATE: The always affable ABC News Political Radar notes that Edwards has made no bones about that fact that he chose his home in a place where his kids wouldn't have to attend crappy schools. Conceivably, the district would be one that would be eligible for federal bribes to accept poor, minority kids from the inner city.
